The 1994 film Tragic Fantasy: The Tiger Of Wanchai is based on the true life story of Chan Yiu Hing, a.k.a Tiger Of Wanchai, an infamous Hong Kong triad figure during the 90s. He is allegedly responsible for a number of triad related incidents which involved filmmakers and celebrities during the early 90s.
While at the beginning of the film it is stated that the film is entirely fictitious, treating the plot as merely coincidental is probably kiding itself, especially when the director involved had known Chan Hiu ying personally. It is also rumoured that Marianne Chan and Simon Yam also had known him pretty well.
And afterall, why would such a mildly violent film be rated category III if it wasn’t trying to glorify a real life triad figure?
